About Pevely

The City of Pevely, Missouri is a quaint community of nearly 4,400 inhabitants located along the Interstate Highway 55 corridor immediately south of the St. Louis Metropolitan Area. The community, which sits between the Mississippi River on the east and a scenic inland plateau area to the west, has a long rich and colorful past. The area was settled in 1799, became a village in 1910, and present day Pevely was incorporated in 1953. It can be said that the history of the community is a history based on strong family values and a pioneering work ethic. The Pevely of today remains dedicated to maintaining its traditional core values and fostering a positive atmosphere for modern family living.

Education

In Pevely parents are fortunate to be able to send their children through an excellent .Triple A. rated school system, and access state-of-the-art public libraries, located within a few minutes travel time of the community. A wide range of higher educational opportunities is available starting with Jefferson Community College and the area.s vocational-technical schools. Jefferson Community College is considered one of the best institutions of its kind in the Midwest offering a multitude of educational options for the recent high school graduate and those seeking continuing education credits. Within 40 miles of the city one can find some of the best 4-year institutions of higher learning in the Country to include St. Louis University, Washington University and the St. Louis campus of the University of Missouri.

Transportation

Two major highways run north and south through the heart of Pevely, Interstate Highway 55 and U.S. Highway 61/67. Both are intersected by State Highway Z, an east/west route serving as a collector for the two arteries, and as a link to the Jefferson County Seat just 7 miles west. Interstate 55 links St. Louis to Chicago and points east as well as Memphis, Tennessee and beyond to the south. The .I-55. corridor is the lifeline of the area and Pevely has commercial and Industrial land available for development around the easy access interchange serving the City. In addition to the two major highways, two famous railroads travel through Pevely, the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe and the Union Pacific. From Pevely one can easily access a full range of transportation services to include Lambert International Airport in St. Louis, a major hub served by several airlines, as well as Mississippi River Port operations.

Quality of Life

The City has kept pace with growth in the area by upgrading water and sewer facilities, improving local traffic arteries and implementing a comprehensive plan to insure that the City develops in an orderly fashion. New and planned residential communities offer a wide selection of affordable quality home sites and apartment living. City parks provide shelter and space for family outings, playground equipment for the children and fields and courts for athletic activities. Each September the Pevely Parks and Recreation Board hosts the .Fall Festival,. a time for residents to come together for a weekend of celebration and entertainment. The fun includes activities such as the pie-baking contest, fireworks display, crafts, and local and big-named entertainment. Solid waste removal is coordinated through a private hauling service and billed by the City. Additionally, the City sponsors an annual bulk-item pick up and curbside chipping of tree limbs in the fall and spring. Full-time animal and pest control operations are provided to include an active mosquito control program during the summer. When winter arrives the Pevely Street Department is poised and ready to effectively handle the snow and sleet. Citizens can also rely on a vigilant zoning and code enforcement program to insure their real estate investment is protected.

Public Safety

Citizens of Pevely rest assured with the knowledge that a well-trained cadre of policemen, firefighters, and EMT.s are there to meet their public safety needs. With regard to police protection the professional law enforcement operation of the City is organized to encompass an acute sensitivity to community desires and a willingness to serve the City in a variety of ways. The Pevely Police Department consists of fourteen full-time professional police officers trained and certified through the Missouri Department of Public Safety. Officers are supported and assisted by ten reservists and five full-time police dispatchers. Dispatchers handle all calls for emergency service within the City and a neighboring community, including 911 calls through the City.s enhanced 911 system. Fire protection is provided through the Dunklin Fire Protection District whose main fire station lies within Pevely.s City Limits. The district has a chief, a fire marshal, three full-time firefighters and twenty-three volunteers. Currently the city has a class 6 ISO insurance rating and anticipates a lower designation in the near future. Ambulance service is provided through a district, which also maintains a modern station within the City limits of Pevely. The Station is manned and equipped 24 hours a day and Citizens can expect prompt response to all points within the City.s corporate boundary. In addition to the foregoing public safety services, the City has in place a state-of-the-art early warning system with digital voice messaging to alert and warn the public in advance of impending storms and other emergency situations.

Utilities

All public and semi-public utility delivery systems are available for the Citizens of the community. From Pevely one has access to advanced telecommunications networks and important fiber optic lines that follow the I-55 corridor through the community. Major natural gas transmission mains and electric utility lines cross through Pevely to serve the area and beyond. For the benefit of the community the City of Pevely owns and operates dependable water delivery and wastewater collection and treatment systems, with plenty of capacity to accommodate growth and development. It is important to note that Pevely.s water and sewer rates are consistently below the Missouri average.

Economic Developemnt

The present and future economy of Pevely is intimately tied to its proximity to the St. Louis Metropolitan Region, and location along major transportation routes. Pevely.s location allows cost-effective access to major markets and insures that a broad base of skilled labor is available within a short distance of the community. The Economic Development Corporation of Jefferson County, classified a Certified Development Corporation by the SBA, can assist small business through the SBA 504 loan program. As an industrial development corporation the organization is also capable of issuing Industrial Development bonds. In addition, Pevely is the home of a privately owned business park with available land for new and expanding business. As a result, Pevely has the land and can assist new and existing business achieve their expansion and relocation needs.

Local Government

Pevely.s governing body is composed of a Mayor and six Aldermen who establish policy and handle the major decision making responsibilities for the community. The City is divided into three wards with two Aldermen representing the constituents in each political division. The Mayor is elected at large and is vested with supervisory control of the day-to-day affairs of the City and its appointed officials. The Mayor and Board hold regular meetings on the first Monday and third Thursday of each month, and the public is invited to attend.
